A tester, a controller and the same level twice
One of the more revealing exercises in our protocol costs about twenty minutes. A tester plays a level with thumbs on glass and writes the log. Then they pair a generic wireless gamepad, prop the phone against it, and play the same level again. We keep both logs side by side. The gap between them is frequently the most honest thing we learn about a game all week.
Sometimes that gap is enormous. A twin-stick shooter that felt like a wrestling match with your own hands becomes precise and unhurried. Sometimes there is no gap at all, because the developer never wired the second input path in and the phone quietly ignores the plastic in your hands. And sometimes the gap runs the wrong way: the game accepts the gamepad, moves the character with it, then locks a required confirmation behind a button that only a finger can reach.
Which genres transform and which shrug
A controller is not a general improvement. It is an improvement for specific kinds of motion. Our rough map, after running the same comparison for years:

The rule underneath the table is easy to state. A controller helps when a game asks for continuous, analogue movement, and hurts when it asks you to point at an arbitrary spot. That is why we never count "supports a gamepad" as a virtue on its own. In a puzzle game it is a curiosity. In a to a requirement.
Three grades of support
We sort what we find into three bands and use the same three words every time.
Full support. Movement, camera, actions, menus, the pause screen and the first launch flow all respond to the controller. You can open the app, reach the level, play it and quit without touching the screen. On-screen prompts change to controller glyphs. Remapping exists, or the default layout is sensible enough that it does not need to.
Partial support. The gamepad drives the character but not the interface. You play with two hands, then reach up to the glass to confirm a result, dismiss an offer or pick the next mission. Playable, never comfortable, and genuinely awkward on a phone clamped into a holder.
Cosmetic support. The store page mentions controllers, and something responds — often movement only, often with a dead zone you cannot adjust or an inverted axis you cannot flip. We treat this as the worst of the three, because it sets an expectation the build does not meet.
The prompts that never update
The most common defect we log is not a broken input. It is a working input paired with the wrong instruction. The character moves perfectly on the stick and the screen still says "tap to jump". Ten minutes later a tutorial panel shows a picture of a finger. An hour after that, a timed sequence asks you to hold a spot on the glass that has nothing to do with how you are playing.
This matters more than it sounds. On a phone, the on-screen prompts are the entire manual. There is no printed card and often no proper controls menu. When the prompts do not track the active input, a new player has to work out which of fourteen buttons matches the icon on screen, and they work it out by pressing all of them. We log every screen where prompt and input disagree, and a game with more than a handful of them loses ground on our clarity heading.
Remapping is the other half. A game that lets you reassign every action forgives a layout you dislike. A game with a fixed layout has to get it right the first time, and plenty do — a good default beats a bad menu. What we mark down is the middle case: a remapping screen that exists but refuses to move the two actions you actually wanted moved.
How we test both paths
The procedure is deliberately dull, because dull is repeatable.
- Play the first session entirely on touch, on a mid-range phone, and log it normally. This stays the primary experience.
- Connect a generic gamepad by cable, then again wirelessly, noting whether the game notices the change without a restart.
- Attempt the whole loop with no touch input at all: launch, menu, settings, level select, play, pause, quit.
- Record every point where a finger was required, and what it was required for.
- Open the controls screen and try to reassign two actions, one of them a menu action.
- Replay the level from step one and compare completion time, error count and how the tester describes the feel of it.
- Disconnect mid-level and record what the game does — pause cleanly, keep running, or lose progress.
Step seven catches more trouble than the rest combined. A wireless link will drop eventually, and a game that answers by walking your character off a ledge for six seconds has not taken the second input path seriously.
What it costs a game in our ranking
We do not keep a separate controller score. Support feeds the same headings as everything else: clarity, comfort, and whether the game respects your time. A 3D action title with cosmetic-grade support loses real position, because we can see the better version of itself that it is declining to be. A word puzzle with no support at all loses nothing, and we say so in the text rather than leaving a blank.
